Architect's Bio

Craig Threshie, Architect

Craig Threshie - Alpen EnvironsCraig has been designing and building all of his adult life, and as a native northern Californian he has enjoyed much of the environment of the Western United States. He has utilized that intimate environmental knowledge on a daily basis in his design practice. Craig studied at the University of California, Berkeley in the acclaimed School of Environmental Design. His studies focused on Architecture, Landscape Architecture, City and Regional Planning and the Earth Sciences. He holds his degree in Landscape Architecture and is a member of the class of 1979.

After having already designed and built numerous custom homes in the San Francisco Bay Area prior to graduation, he created a design/build firm under a general contracting license with his father and for eight years after graduation, designed and built over seventy-five custom residential projects across the northern state. Upon moving his family to the Monterey Peninsula in 1987 and for two years thereafter, he ran the Design Department at one of the top fifty remodeling design/build firms in the nation, Renovations. Then in 1990, Craig was awarded the position of Project Manager and later, Architect, at The Paul Davis Partnership, an award winning architecture/planning firm located in Monterey. The work he performed there was in hotels, resorts, restaurants, public/municipal facilities, community recreational facilities, historic renovation and adaptive reuse projects, commercial/retail facilities, administrative/office facilities, multifamily residences and of course, custom homes. During this time, Craig earned his reputation in Green Building and Sustainable Design practices.

In 1994, Craig moved to Truckee, continuing to manage many projects for The Paul Davis Partnership in Monterey County while developing new client relationships in the Sierra. He created Alpen Environs that fall, focusing his attention on the design of state-of-the-art timber frames and vastly expanding his repertoire of Green Building Design practices. While practicing in the Sierra, custom homes, remodel/additions to homes, historic restorations/additions, and commercial projects have been Craig’s primary focus.

Craig has always maintained a great deal of professional and community involvement throughout his career. The organizations he has been a member of and often volunteered his time to include the:

    • American Institute of Architects (AIA)
    • American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA)
    • International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO)
    • Sierra Green Building Association (SIGBA)
    • Contractors Association of Truckee Tahoe (CATT)
    • Timber Framers Guild (TFG)
    • Truckee Donner Chamber of Commerce
    • Truckee Noon Rotary
    • Sierra Club
    • Sierra Business Council (SBC) In 2004, Craig co-wrote a book for the SBC entitled “Building Vibrant Sierra Communities: A Commercial and Mixed Use Handbook”
    • Tahoe Donner Association Architectural Standards Committee of which he served as Chairman.
    • Craig was appointed to and served on the Town of Truckee Planning Commission for three years from 1999 to 2002, of which he served as Chairman in 2001. Due to his deep concern for the town and the quality of life for its citizens during a very high intensity growth period, Craig ran for election and won a seat on the Truckee Town Council where he served as Council member from December 2002 through December 2006, and served as Mayor through the year of 2005. During this time, he was involved with an extensive array of committee work and special project planning (see attached proclamations) that have given him a deep understanding of the public process, government and the permit processes throughout all stages.

Throughout his career, Craig has had numerous architectural and planning projects published in magazines, newspapers and a book and has had projects win local and national awards.

Recently, the architect has developed another avenue of his artistic quest for excellence in design and craftsmanship in that of jewelry and fine small scale sculpture. Craig has developed skills in gem cutting and carving as well as precious metal sculpting since he was an adolescent. He has also developed a passion for sailing, especially in tropical environs, and has created a web site where you can see his jewelry work of tropical inspiration.
